For many, financial consulting might seem intimidating, or maybe even an unlikely career choice. I was no different. Fresh out of National Service in 2015, I had a clear vision: excel at university, complete an MBA, and secure a stable, well-paying job in finance. I thought financial consulting was a shaky industry, flooded with competitors and burdened by public misconceptions. But sometimes, life’s most rewarding paths are the ones we didn’t plan on taking.

Here’s how a reluctant intern became a passionate advocate for a career in financial consulting—and why it could be a path worth considering for you, too.

The Unexpected Start

When an internship at AIA came my way in May 2016, I saw it as nothing more than a temporary gig. With no obligation to commit, I could gain experience, make some money, and move on. Yet, from the first few days, my perceptions were challenged. What I expected to be a competitive, isolated environment was instead collaborative and dynamic. My colleagues were driven but supportive, with a real sense of teamwork that fostered learning and growth.

That internship quickly transformed into a pivotal experience. Financial consulting wasn’t a closed-off, saturated field; it was open to innovation and ripe with potential. The flexibility it offered allowed me to work alongside my studies while also investing in my personal development. By the end of summer, I began to see it as more than just a side hustle—it was a career I could shape to my own goals.

Choosing Financial Consulting as a Career: The Turning Point

By the end of 2016, I’d made my choice: financial consulting was no longer just an experiment but a full-time commitment. Here are the key factors that drove me to pursue it wholeheartedly:

  • Work-Life Balance: One of the biggest draws of financial consulting was the control I had over my schedule. This field enabled me to craft my own working hours, balancing personal and professional priorities in ways traditional finance roles rarely allow.
  • Recognition for Hard Work: In financial consulting, effort is directly tied to rewards—not only financially but also through recognition and support from the industry. As I put in the hours, my achievements were celebrated by both colleagues and clients, reinforcing my commitment.
  • Autonomy and Financial Security: Financial consulting gave me the freedom to carve my own path and to become, in many ways, my own boss. With guidance and perseverance, it also provided a level of financial stability and growth potential that few other careers could match.

Scaling Up: From Consultant to Entrepreneur

By 2020, my career in financial consulting had given me the financial foundation and skills to branch out. That year, I launched my own digital marketing agency, followed by a virtual assistance business and a cleaning business, generating $15,000 in monthly profits. Now, I manage over 1,000 clients at AIA while overseeing three growing businesses. This level of scalability and freedom would have been unthinkable in a conventional finance role, yet it’s exactly what financial consulting made possible.

The ability to diversify, to explore multiple avenues for growth, and to build a portfolio of thriving ventures is a unique advantage that financial consulting provides. Each step—whether in consulting, marketing, or my other businesses—has been built on a foundation of client relationships, strategic systems, and a mindset of constant improvement.

Multiplying Success: The Power of Systems and Mentorship

One of the most transformative lessons from my consulting career is the importance of systems. Early on, I developed lead-generation pipelines, training programs, and mentorship resources that now support new consultants as they enter the field. These systems have multiplied my success, allowing others to “copy-trade” my achievements and fast-track their own growth with minimal risk.

Through these structured resources, new consultants gain scripts, marketing materials, and a step-by-step guide honed through years of experience. This ecosystem minimizes the trial-and-error phase and accelerates success for driven individuals looking to build a career with real potential. By empowering others, I also free myself to focus on scaling and strategizing for the future.

Why Financial Consulting? My Answer: “Why Not?”

When people ask why I chose financial consulting, I have a simple response: “Why not?” Financial consulting offers something few careers do—the chance to blend financial independence with entrepreneurship, growth, and continuous learning. It’s a career that equips you with skills in financial literacy, client relations, and business management, opening doors to countless opportunities.

This path isn’t for everyone. It demands self-discipline, a drive to learn, and a willingness to step out of your comfort zone. But if you’re ambitious, curious, and ready to challenge yourself, financial consulting could very well transform your future. With the right systems and support, you don’t just build a career; you create an entire ecosystem for success.
